Hypervolt 3.0 is currently our go to charger for domestic installs. This chargepoint ticks all the boxes for both the installer and the customer. With it’s easy to install process and easy to use app, along with being great value for money, it’s a popular choice when it comes to domestic charging.
Order and purchase of the unit
As an approved installer for Hypervolt we benefit from the very best prices that we can pass onto our customers. The ordering and delivery process for a Hypervolt is incredibly easy and usually the unit can arrive on next day delivery.
As this charger requires a CT clamp fitted to monitor the load of the property a data cable is required. Hypervolt’s own Hyper Connect cable which has the data cable built into the power cable (like the EV Ultra) enables us to order both the unit and amount of cable needed for the install from one supplier.
Installation
The Hypervolt 3.0 comes with a clear step by step instruction manual for both installing and commissioning. The unit can be easily taken apart and mounted safely without having to hold up the whole unit with your other hand. There is a mounting template within the box which assists with ensuring the unit is fitted in the correct place for the customer.
The main body of the charger is quite small which can make termination of cables difficult at times, however as the front panel must be removed until it comes to commissioning there is very little to the unit therefore there isn’t the need of stripping it down to make the cable terminations.
Another clever feature of this unit is the maximum fuse dual within the charger. Depending on the size of the main fuse to the property depends on which number on the dial the installer sets the charger on. This ensures the Hypervolt draws out the adequate power for the property fuse size.
As with any charger that has a CT clamp fitted, the unit will adjust the load it can draw out accordingly alongside other household appliances that are on at the same time, this dynamic load feature has a visual aid for customers. The LED lights that are a unique feature to the unit, will dim down when other appliances are on, clearly showing the customer that less power is being inputted into the car. As appliances such as electric showers and kettles are turned off the LED light brightens to indicate full power is being distributed back into the vehicle.
Commissioning
The biggest improvement seen from the 2.0 to the 3.0 is the ease of commissioning. Previously the Hypervolt required a very strong Wifi signal to connect. On smaller properties when the charger was fitted close to the Wifi router, there was still issues with the unit connecting to the internet, meaning the customer either couldn’t use the smart features or had to fit a Wifi booster. However, the 3.0 isn’t as reliant on a strong signal which makes setting the charger up so much easier.
Even if there is a weak signal the charger only requires a Bluetooth connection to work as a plug and go mode, meaning at the very least the chargepoint will still charge a car when it is plugged in.
End user experience
The Hypervolt app is incredibly easy to use. The customer has the opportunity to lock their charger, set up charging schedules and add their electricity tariff to monitor usage costs.
As the unit comes with a tethered lead as standard the customer is safe in the knowledge that they always have a charging cable available to them. There’s no issue with the tethered lead (that starts at 5m and goes up to 10m) being left loose and untidy as the cable can easily be wrapped around the unit with the plug slotted into a wall mounted holder that comes with the chargepoint. The long 10m tethered lead ensues those that park quite away from the chargepoint can still plug in without any problems.
As an additional quirky feature these units have a selection of LED modes, enabling the customer to personalise their device. A personal favourite is the party mode, that can be voice activated when the charger is paired with a smart speaker. We’re all suckers for a quirky feature, right?
